I've discovered that the Sierra Foothills contain nicely hidden wine gems awaiting discovery. Fortunately, Rhone varietals are not only favored for their many wine niceties, but these varietals do exceedingly well within this American Viticulture Area.

Gold Hill's 2001 El Dorado Syrah is overloaded with delicious wine appeal. Starting off, the wine shows a dark garnet core that fades to a ruby rim. The nose is chocker block full of aroma intensity. It seems the more you swirl the more you smell. The developed nose presents aromas of plum, raspberry/red currant fruit that enticingly mix with leather, barnyard and burnt peppery spice.

In the mouth the palate is treated respectfully with plum and raspberry/red currant flavors. The ample body is built with smooth tannins delivering a touch of powdery dryness along with crisp acidity. The mouth feel is mellowed with a rich consistency. Generous and persistent on the finish, this Syrah has harmony from beginning to end.
