A good single varietal bottling of Cabernet Franc wine is
hard to find. Producing a light-to-medium bodied wine, this
varietal is often part of a blend providing a fruit lift to
its Cabernet Sauvignon partner. But a stand alone bottle of
Cab Franc? Like I said, hard to find. However, there are
those exceptions –rare as they may be. Enter Freemark Abbey's 2000 Cabernet Franc release. There is plenty to like about this wine on its own, but it really shines when paired with a good meal. The wine shows a dark ruby core that fades to a purple rim. It still shows plenty of youthful color even in spite of its age. The nose has wonderful aromas of blackberry, raspberry and rhubarb that mix well with spice and a burnt smoky toast. In the mouth the medium body is well suited to the racy acidity and fine light tannins. The wine has a solid structure from beginning to end and parts with a lengthy finish. |
