Scansano is a town in the Tuscan province of Grosseto, Italy. Morellino of Scansano is a sub-variety of Sangiovese and Baroncini blends in small amounts of Ciliegiolo and Alicante in their Le Mandorlae. My first experience with this wine was their 2000 release, which I enjoyed very much.

Their 2003 bottling is even better. This wine exhibits a black cherry red color with just a hint of purple along the edge. The nose is treated to wonderful aromas of capers, black cherry, spice, meatiness, a hint of leather and enough dust to keep the nose twitching with delight.

The fruit follows through on the palate and is supported with smooth tannins that yield a fine astringency. The wine has a solid structure and has plenty of fruit to continue developing. The generous finish is dry and the ample body posses a harmonious balance. This is definitely a bottle to consider when you want a Chianti Classico type quality at half the price.
