I continue to enjoy Petite Sirah. It is one of those
varietals that are relatively tannic, has beautiful color
and quite distinctive flavors. Because of these traits,
Petite Sirah can enjoy a few years bottle age and then offer
an even more enjoyable glass of wine. Guenoc has done a nice job with their 1999 North Coast Petite Sirah. The rich garnet color is essentially opaque. A variety of aromas emerge after a few minutes of breathing time. This wine exhibits prunes, chocolate, spice (nutmeg) and even some tasty bacon wafting around in the glass. Once in the mouth, you will discover the relatively tannic nature of Petite Sirah. The tannins are drying and the effect is felt by this astringency. The full bodied wine parts with a lingering finish. Overall the wine has good flavor and a smooth warm finish. |
