A discovery of mine back in 2004 is a winery called Bodegas Aguirre located in Livermore Valley. The winery is owned by Ricardo E. Aguirre who apart from being an avid wine maker is also a heart surgeon. Make no mistake, Dr. Aguirre is creating some exceptionally fine wines.

The 2002 Estate Trio is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (40%), Merlot (40%) and Petite Syrah (20%). In the glass the wine quickly grabs your attention showing an opaque ruby core with a purple hue around the rim. The nose is full of wonderful aromas of black cherries, blackberries, licorice, clove, cinnamon, cedar and white pepper that follow through to the palate. With zesty acidity and light tannins offering a fine astringency, the wine sports a muscular body and a supple consistency showing off its elegant structure proudly. With plenty of youth, this wine is very approachable - yet big - with a powerful intensity that is developing along with a harmonious complexity. This is one elegant fine wine so grab any and all you can get!
