Lava Cap is one of those Sierra Foothill jewels and a wonderful wine is their 2001 Reserve Barbera. The winery is located in Placerville, California, and is a recommended visit.

Their 2001 Reserve Barbera is highly likeable with or without food. The wine's medium ruby core fades to a ruby garnet rim. Aromas of blueberry, blackberry and vanilla are potent and, along with some floral (violets) notes, rounds out a wonderful nose. In the mouth the wine shows equal compassion as the palate enjoys the ripe fruit flavors found on the nose. The smooth silky tannins combine with fresh acidity and give the wine a pleasing mouth-feel reminiscent of many quality Italian Barbera wines. Overall, it's a fine Barbera that's concentrated and smooth, providing plenty of drinking enjoyment.

Our second tasting of the 2001 Barbera yeilded similar results to our first tasting. It poured into the glass with a lovely color of ruby in the core and a orange/mahogany rim showing a touch of age. On the nose, delicious aromas of black cherry and vanilla mix well with lots of smoky sweet oak. The mouth was full of black cherry flavor and nice oak tannins that are soft, smooth and lightly drying. The generous alcohol adds softness to the ample body, giving the wine a pleasing balance. The long finish parts with a strong intensity and plenty of savory enjoyment. This wine is developing nicely, offering a diverse complexity.
