Ehrhardt Estates Winery was a discovery of mine at the 2004
Family Winemakers of California event. Their 2002 Estate Petite Syrah is big, bold and delicious. The wine shows an opaque purple/black core that fades to a thin rose rim. The nose is treated to great aromas of ripe dark cherries and blackberries, sweet smoke and vanilla along with hints of chocolate. In the mouth the wine is equally pleasing, offering flavors of dark cherry. The wine is full bodied with big tannins and refreshing acidity. With plenty of fruit, tannins and acidity, this wine can spend some time on the shelf. However, with such teeth-staining passion in each glass, good luck trying to wait! I have bottle number 4,019 of 5,250 bottles produced for this vintage. Randy Ziegler is the winemaker and hopefully he didn't have to hand number every bottle! |
